HELLO EVERYONE,
And Happy St Patrick’s Day greetings to one and all from Michael, Geraldine and all of us here in the Killeen House in spectacular Killarney – THE PLACE THAT GOD MADE WHEN HE WAS IN A GOOD HUMOUR…..!

With just under a month to go to re-opening the Killeen House for our 17th (yes, that’s seventeenth!) season on April 15th, we are really looking forward to welcoming lots of old friends and meeting lots of new ones over the course of the Summer season. After all, as the old saying has it “In Ireland, there are no such things as strangers – only friends you have yet to meet!”

Given the real strength of the EURO right now against some of the major currencies like the US and Canadian Dollars and the Pound Sterling, Ireland is certainly going to be a more expensive place to vacation in this year. We here in the Killeen House are very conscious of that, and we can assure all our Guests that we appreciate the extra sacrifice that they will be making to be with us. We in turn make you this simple promise.. We will do all that we can do (and all that the Laws of the Land allow us to do!) to send you out of our Hotel laden down with happy memories and grinning from ear to ear!

As usual with these Newsletters, you’ll find information which is hopefully useful to anyone who might be interested in finding out more about Ireland or maybe even visiting.

But there’s no substitute for dealing with passionate and committed people who have the great good fortune to know virtually all that Ireland has to offer better than they know the back of their own hands. So if you have any questions or need any advice about anything to do with Ireland, please just contact Michael or Geraldine here

Enjoy our Newsletter

WE LIVE IN A MAZE

We're not dummies here in the Killeen House - although the jury is still out on Michael - and we know that no one comes to Ireland especially to stay with us. (Except maybe for the Prestons, the Dutch O'Sullivans, the Lockport O'Briens, the Kellys, the Dolans, the Freeses, the Troncones and just a few hundred or so others...)

We fully realize our place in life – which is right at the end of a dark and lonely maze-shaped tube…..!

At the opening of this tube is Ireland, and that’s where the Guest has to enter into in the first instance

Then, they have to want to find their way out of Dublin to the West Coast of Ireland, renowned for its wild and rugged beauty…….

Once there, they have to say to themselves that the Southwestern part of the Country is really where they want to be, because of its unique landscape, World-class attractions, and amazingly friendly people…..

Next they must decide that Killarney is surely the pinnacle of all that is great, glorious, awesome and wonderful about Ireland and that their vacation is simply not complete unless they rest their weary bones alongside its storied Lakes and under the shadow of the famed McGillicuddy Reeks range of mountains……..

And by the way, and after all that, if you make it this far – you’d be stupid not to stay in the Killeen House…..!!! (The foregoing will never be called snappy and to-the –point advertising – but we hope you get the message!)

NEW PRICING SYSTEM ON OUR REVAMPED WEBSITE

Traditionally here in the Killeen House we have always just offered normal rack rates, with the prices for Bed and Breakfast and for dinner remaining the same whether a Guest was staying with us for one night, 10 nights, or any number of nights in between

This seemed to suit everyone fine, and we never had any problem with it, except very occasionally when a Guest might enquire as to whether we offered any ‘package’ rates for multi-night stays

Well, for 2008, along with offering our usual rack rates, we are getting ourselves into the ‘package’ business. (Okay, okay – we know we are maybe 25 years behind the times…..but better late than never is what we say!)

The rack rate is the standard price for Bed & Breakfast. With this type of booking, we ask for your Credit Card details at time of booking, which we keep on file, and you are charged at the time of checkout. If you wish to see details or to make a rack rate booking, please click here

The Package prices have a range of different offerings, from one night of Bed & breakfast, all the way up to 5 nights of Dinner, bed & Breakfast. With these bookings, we ask that our Guests pre-pay for the full package at the time of booking. For further information on our package prices, or to make a booking, please see here

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR ALL GUESTS WHO HAVE ALREADY MADE A BOOKING FOR 2008……..

If you would like to change the detail or pricing structure of your existing booking to one of our new offers, please let us know here

We hope that our Guests will be happy with our new system, and if you have any questions about any aspect of it, please let us know here

CIE TOURS INTERNATIONAL AWARD AND TRIPADVISOR

CIE Tours International is one of the largest Tour Operators in Ireland, bringing in excess of 50,000 Guests into the country on an annual basis

Every year, they survey all their clients, and ask them to vote on what they considered to be the best experience that they had while on their Irish vacation, under a range of different headings

Then, at an AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE Ceremony each year, they present the chosen winners with their Award. This year the Oscars-like event took place in St Patrick’s Hall in Ireland’s most historically important building, Dublin Castle. (And St Patrick’s Hall is the venue where the President of Ireland is inaugurated every seven years, so its not such a shabby place to receive an Award…)

For the seventh year, ROZZERS Restaurant @ Killeen House won the “Best Dining Experience” Award

We are really delighted with this achievement, number 1 because its an Award that is voted on by normal Guests rather than by Food ‘Critics’, and number 2 because we are the only operation to have won it (in the words of the citation) “not once…not twice…but an amazing seven times…”

We are gratified and humbled to receive this vote of confidence from all of our CIE Guests, even if all it really means is that we have created a whip for ourselves for this coming year, in that we have to really strive to get Award number eight under out belt…..

Please click here to visit the new dedicated website for Rozzers Restaurant

Something else we are extremely proud of - again, because its decided on by Guests rather than Critics - is our position on the World’s largest Hotel Review website, Trip Advisor.

For the last couple of years (and despite pretty intense competition from our friends and competing colleagues here in Killarney!) , we have been consistently voted the Number 1 Hotel in Killarney by reviewers on Trip Advisor

If you have stayed the Killeen House in the past and would like to write a review on us please click here , or if you are just interested in what ordinary Guests such as yourself have to say about us, please visit here

SAINT PATRICK’S DAY

The Saint Patrick’s Day period is always a special time in Michael and Geraldine’s life…..

The 15th is our ‘baby’ Michelle’s birthday. This week, she reaches the grand old age of 18. She also embarked last September on a four year Degree in Hotel Management Course in the famous Shannon School of International Hotel Management. (She is the fourth generation of her family to enter the Hotel industry – proof positive if ever it were needed that the Rosneys are slow learners…..)

The 16th is the day when Geraldine celebrates the fact that against all the odds she has managed to stay married in loving and harmonious wedded bliss (!?!) to Michael for an amazing 24 years – and managed keep him under some form of control and also to stay sane and beautiful at the same time

And the 17th, the big day itself, is when St Patrick has to shove over and share the limelight with Geraldine…..because the 17th is also the birthday of the Lady Geraldine, the Queen of Killeen and the bright, shining and sparkling love of Michael’s life. We hope you will all join us in wishing Geraldine a very happy 39th birthday…. (All wise men know that the happiest 10 years in any lady’s life is between the age of 39 and 40…?)

Looking back on last year for a moment, St Patrick’s Day 2007 was also a very special day in Michael’s life. Outside of the fact that it was the first time he missed Geraldine’s birthday in over 25 years, (thank God he survived to tell the tale!) he had the fantastic and wonderful honour to be the Grand Marshal of the Baton Rouge St Patrick’s Day Parade.

For Michael, it was one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences in a life that’s thankfully had more than its fair share of both. To the Shingletons, the Hammonds, The Quigleys, the Kimbals, the Morels (thanks for making me a D.A. Harry…!) and all the giant-hearted people of Baton Rouge, know that your warmth and goodness will never be forgotten, and know also that there will always be a ‘welcome on the mat’ for you and all yours in the Killeen House in Killarney. And if you don’t mind, just one small suggestion for you all…… Any event that attempts to marry up Mardi Gras with St Patrick, should automatically be given the highest possible Surgeon General’s Health Warning…..And also, there should be a mandatory notification to the Department of Homeland Security as well…..!

OUR STAFF (OR SHOULD WE SAY “THE TEAM”….!)

Any Tourism product always has been, always is and always will be all about the three P’s -- People, Place and Pace

As far as we are concerned, first among equals in this trio is definitely People. People are what its all about. They are what makes a good vacation a great vacation. They are what sets Ireland apart from all its competitors. Above all, they are the providers of the great memories that hopefully everyone takes home with them from an Irish vacation

Here in the Killeen House, we are truly blessed to have a bunch of people working with us that are not really like our Staff or our Team, - no, they are more like our family

People like Charlie, Paul, Jessica, Janet, Maureen and all the rest of the gang

It's them that take the 170 year old heap of stone, bricks and mortar that is the Hotel, and turns it into a place that makes you want to return to at the end of yet another great day of golfing or rambling around the Kingdom of Kerry

It's them that will always go the extra mile to give you that little warm and fuzzy feeling that is part and parcel of an Irish vacation

And most especially its them that will welcome you into our Hotel and treat you not as a Guest but as friends they are welcoming into their own home

This year we had a great celebration when our favourite Offaly Girl, Jessica finally ‘tied the knot’ with Stephen (who’s a really nice guy except for the fact that he’s working in that little 5 star Aghadoe Heights Hotel place at the top of our hill)

We all went to Jessica’s home place of Edenderry in December and had the Mother of all celebrations……

Here’s a few photos of the great day here

THE WONDERFUL WWW

What does WWW stand for?

Is it Weird, Wild and Wonderful?

Is it Woeful, Wacky and Wasteful?

Is it Wicked, Witty and Wise?

No, it stands for the World Wide Web and it is probably the greatest invention to bless (or blight!) human civilization since an Irish man invented the wheel in order to get to the Pub faster……

We have lots of friends and past Guests from around the World who thankfully include us on their mailing lists and so we get lots of interesting stuff all the time

Here’s a selection that we hope will give you a bit of pleasant diversion……….

  • Move over Michael Flatley. Proof the Irish discovered Africa

  • At last! A simple explanation of the golf swing. Golf Tip

  • This little Irish girl is not too happy in school it seems. Demolition call

  • PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, do yourself a favour, get a pair of earphones and listen to this - its simply amazing! Virtual Barber Shop

  • There's something about this guy that will bring a little bit of a lump to your throat. Paul Potts - talent show

  • This song and picture gallery will really bring memories flooding back for lots of people. We didn't start the fire

  • I will never again entertain any whining or complaining comments from our guests about the Ring of Kerry or Dingle Peninsula roads.... Bolivian Highway

  • John Cleese is the star of Fawlty Towers and a great letter writer too..... Letter to America

  • If you have a moment to spare - tranquilize a sheep or two! Game
